John Scofield’s Combo 73
Featuring Vicente Archer, Gerald Clayton, and Bill Stewart
Combo ’73 refers to the fact that jazz guitarist John Scofield is now 73 years old. It is a throwback to his 2018 album Combo ’66, which was also a reference to his age and riffs on the titles of some of the jazz records he grew up with, including Bill Evans’s Trio ’64. Aside from being one of the principal innovators of modern jazz guitar, Scofield is an artist of an even rarer sort: a stylistic chameleon who has forged a consistent, rock-solid aesthetic identity. A three-time Grammy winner with more than 40 recordings to his credit, Scofield has expressed himself in the vernacular of bebop, blues, jazz funk, organ jazz, acoustic chamber jazz, electronically tinged groove music, jam band, and orchestral ensembles with ease and enthusiasm.
John Scofield's Combo 73 will be in concert for two shows, Saturday, September 20, 6 pm & 8 pm, at MIM Music Theatre, 4725 E Mayo Blvd., Phoenix AZ 85050. Tickets are $33.50–$44.50, available online at mim.org
